Traders Benefit From New Currency Exchange Rates

After the U.S. Dollar finished lower against most major currencies last week, investors continued funding riskier assets with the lower yielding Dollar. The new currency exchange rates are favored by U.S. traders who are using the diminishing dollar for funding high-yield bets.

The dollar declined the most since May and the greenback became the least expensive funding currency. The new currency exchange rates, prompted by the decline of the dollar, motivated investors to sell the dollar and buy riskier assets. News that China’s industrial output rose 12.3% was also a catalyst contributing to the Dollar’s weakness.

The weakness of the dollar seems to be a dominating theme in the currency market for the second half of 2009. The appetite for risk has improved. Everyone is looking to a hopeful recovery in the U.S. and all other countries in the fourth quarter into 2010.

The U.S. dollar moved lower against its Japanese counterpart in early Asian trading today, after funding rates for dollar loans dropped below those of its major rivals. Last week ended with traders continuing to use the Dollar as a funding currency rather than the traditional Yen.

Unless there is a dramatic turnaround to the downside in global equity markets, there will be more pressure on the U.S. Dollar and Japanese Yen.

The deficit concerns undermine the dollar, but when growth begins to recover, the deficit picture should start to improve. For now, traders will benefit from the new currency exchange rates and will use the U.S. Dollar to fund riskier assets.

Pharmaceuticals in the environment

AstraZeneca understands, and takes seriously, the concerns over the detections of trace amounts of pharmaceutical residues in the environment. We are continually improving our understanding of the science and the way we responsibly manage our products.

The presence of trace levels of pharmaceuticals in the environment results largely from patient excretion and is an inevitable result of the way most current medicines work. Pharmaceuticals need to be stable enough to have a useful shelf life and oral dosage forms must be robust enough to pass through the stomach intact.

Internally and in cooperation with other companies, academics and regulators, we are pursuing a wide range of actions that help us understand and manage the way our products interact with the environment. We are committed to identifying any potential adverse affects on the environment and responsibly balancing these against the benefits that our medicines bring to patients lives.

Our environmental scientists, located mainly at our Environmental Laboratory in Brixham, UK, are dedicated to advancing PiE related research. In 2007 we opened a new, $26 million laboratory in Brixham to strengthen further our capabilities in this area.

We also design our manufacturing processes to minimise impact on the environment and encourage patients to follow government unused medicine disposal guidelines.

GE is participating in a major initiative urging the U.S. government to quickly enact strong legislation to significantly reduce greenhouse emissions. The formation of the United States Climate Action Partnership (USCAP), illustrates the commitment of GE and other founding U.S.-based businesses and leading non-governmental organizations (NGOs) to address the challenge of climate change. The other participants include: Alcoa, BP America, Caterpillar, Duke Energy, DuPont, FPL Group, Lehman Brothers, PG&E, PNM Resources, Environmental Defense, Natural Resources Defense Council, Pew Center on Global Climate Change and World Resources Institute.

Created by consensus, USCAP has released a set of principles and recommendations, intended to help slow, stop and reverse the growth of greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions over the shortest period of time reasonably achievable. In its report, A Call for Action, the group also has cited the environmental and economic benefits associated with its recommendations.

How USCAP Evolved

With the goal of issuing recommendations that would initiate formal discussion on carbon policy, USCAP was formed in 2006, after GE and other major multinational companies were approached by four NGOs: Environmental Defense, Natural Resources Defense Council, World Resources Institute and Pew Center on Global Climate Change. In addition to the USCAP effort, GE has worked with these NGOs on many other initiatives, including the 2005 launch of ecomagination.

The first formal meeting was held in July 2006, and formal discussions followed to develop policy recommendations. The Meridian Institute facilitated the group, with each company and organization forming a small working team to support the process. Working meetings and CEO meetings were held to build awareness and consensus and to finalize the "Call for Action" principals announced last week.

GE's input was derived primarily from customer/stakeholder meetings over the last few years including the customer oriented Energy 2015 series, the U.S. Carbon Summit held with both customers and NGOs, and the Energy Evolutions programs held in cooperation with EEI.

The core group of companies and NGOs forming USCAP agreed to keep the group at a manageable size in order to effectively formulate and issue a framework that would be a catalyst for discussion. Discussions were kept confidential within the group, in order to reach a consensus and develop a position from which to start.

During the first six months, the group's effort focused on developing USCAP's recommendations. Its solutions-based report, A Call for Action, was finalized in late 2006. The report includes a landmark set of principles and recommendations to underscore the urgent need for a policy framework on climate change. The report also lays out a blueprint for a mandatory economy-wide, market-driven approach to climate protection. The group's recommendations are based on the following principles:

  • Account for the global dimensions of climate change
  • Recognize the importance of technology
  • Be environmentally effective
  • Create economic opportunity and advantage
  • Be fair to sectors disproportionately impacted
  • Recognize and encourage early action

GE's Commitment

On April 4, 2006, during a Senate Energy and Natural Resources Committee hearing on the design of a CO2 cap-and-trade system, David Slump, General Manager, Global Marketing, said, "GE supports development of market-based programs to slow, eventually stop, and ultimately reverse, the growth of greenhouse gases (GHG)."

The launch of ecomagination two years ago also reflects GE's commitment to a reduction in greenhouse gases. GE is committed to offering products and services to help customers reduce greenhouse gas emissions and decrease the company's own emissions. With ecomagination, GE has committed to

  1. An absolute 1 percent reduction in greenhouse emissions from the 2004 baseline by 2012, which represents an estimated 30 percent actual reduction when our growth rate is factored in
  2. A 30 percent energy efficiency improvement by 2012
  3. A 30 percent energy intensity reduction by 2008.

Under ecomagination, GE has developed the following global policy positions around climate change:

  1. Technology exists to address climate change.
  2. A portfolio of technology solutions should be pursued.
  3. Accelerated deployment of technology often requires policy support.
  4. All policy levers should be utilized in a coordinated manner.
  5. A long-term price for carbon accelerates technology deployment.

The USCAP initiative echoes these fundamental beliefs and links them to key legislative and regulatory premises. USCAP advocates that:

  • Technology is key to a solution. The currently available technologies for reducing greenhouse gas emissions include but are not limited to, wind, solar, nuclear, cleaner coal, and hybrid vehicles. The cost-effective deployment of these technologies is critical, and R&D for further technology advances must have the support of government.
  • A consistent carbon policy will be critical to the development and adoption of advanced technologies that improve efficiencies and lower emissions.
  • Industry should have a voice in defining carbon policies, and that USCAP is the mechanism for industry and environmental groups to contribute leadership to the formation of carbon policy in the United States.
  • A monetary value for CO2 will accelerate technology development and deployment, and will allow the market to determine which solutions best meet the needs of specific customers. A mandatory and flexible climate program will create needed regulatory certainty for investment decisions and choices.

Next Steps

USCAP will engage in the legislative process by attending briefings and hearings and assisting in the development of legislative specifications. In addition, USCAP is seeking additional members to join the effort. The group is particularly interested in adding new members from the power generation and transportation sectors with the following criteria:

  • CEO commitment and acceptance of defined Principles/Recommendations
  • Agreement to work with all stakeholders to advance a legislative position that can be enacted

Shares in Japan Airlines soar on takeover speculation

Shares of Japan Airlines Corp. surged Monday amid speculation that American Airlines and Delta Air Lines are vying to buy stakes in the money-losing carrier.

Under a major restructuring plan, the airline known as JAL is looking to raise $2.8 billion US from banks, investment funds and airlines, including Delta, according to the Nikkei financial daily.

Japan's largest airline said in a statement Monday that media reports of tie-ups with foreign carriers are not based on official information from the company and that nothing has been decided.

JAL stock soared almost eight per cent to 176 yen on the Tokyo Stock Exchange, beating a sharp slump in the overall market.

The Nikkei 225 stock average tumbled 2.3 per cent to 10,202.06 as the dollar fell to a seven-month low against the yen.

Company losses

Hit by plummeting demand amid a slumping global economy and swine flu fears, JAL incurred its biggest-ever quarterly net loss of $1 billion for the three months ending June 30.

Delta is in preliminary discussions about buying a stake in JAL for about $300 million. The U.S. airline giant could become a leading shareholder in JAL and get coveted access to Haneda Airport, close to Tokyo's business district, according to a person briefed on the Delta situation.

The talks between the two carriers are in the preliminary stage, and it is unclear what form a partnership between Delta and Japan Airlines might take.

Some analysts have said the move would make sense for Delta and help expand its position in a key market like Japan. But others question why Delta would want to use its cash to make an investment in Japan Airlines.

The Nikkei said Delta has offered to invest as much as $550 million, which would give it an 11.2 per cent stake in JAL.

American interest

Delta's rival American Airlines is also negotiating a possible investment, according to a person familiar with the talks. American would like to form a joint business venture with JAL, in which the two carriers would seek antitrust immunity to work closely in setting schedules and prices for service around the world, according to the person, who spoke over the weekend on condition of anonymity because of the sensitive nature of the talks.

American and JAL already have a so-called code-sharing agreement in which they sell seats on each other's flights. If they won immunity from antitrust laws, they could co-operate in setting prices and schedules. For example, instead of each operating a Chicago-to-Tokyo flight around the same time, they could stagger the flights to maximize traffic while splitting the revenue.

Delta doesn't have a Japanese partner. A Delta-JAL hookup would raise doubts about JAL's ability to remain in oneworld, an alliance of airlines that includes American and British Airways. Delta is in another alliance, called SkyTeam, which also includes Air France-KLM.

France, too

JAL is also reportedly in talks with Air France-KLM over a capital tie-up, Japan's top-selling newspaper the Yomiuri, reported this weekend.

The discussions could turn into a battle between Delta and American, said Osuke Itazaki, an analyst at Credit Suisse in Tokyo.

"If a tug-of-war develops between the two American airlines, it is likely to be positive for JAL's shares by raising their potential value," Itazaki said in a note to clients.

"It would also have practical advantages in terms of fund raising and enlarging the scope for efficiency improvements at JAL."

The Nikkei said JAL would cut 4,700 jobs equal to about 10 per cent of its group workforce under the restructuring plan. The airline will also sell subsidiaries and assets to raise capital.

In trading Monday on the New York Stock Exchange, Delta shares rose 50 cents to $8.56 US, a gain of 6.2 per cent, in trading of 13.5 million shares.

American Airlines parent AMR Corp. gained 18 cents to $6.88, a rise of 2.7 per cent.

German Investor Confidence Rises to Three-Year High (Update1)

Sept. 15 (Bloomberg) -- German investor confidence rose to the highest level in more than three years in September after the economic recovery gathered strength and stocks surged.

The ZEW Center for European Economic Research said its index of investor and analyst expectations, which aims to predict developments six months ahead, increased to 57.7 from 56.1 in August. Economists predicted the index would rise to 60, the median of 39 forecasts in a Bloomberg News survey showed.

Improving factory orders, exports and business confidence suggest growth is accelerating after Germany unexpectedly exited its worst recession since World War II in the second quarter. The benchmark DAX index has rebounded 52 percent from its March trough and reached the highest level in almost a year last week as companies worldwide from Goldman Sachs Group Inc to Bayer AG posted better-than-projected earnings.

The ZEW’s gain “may be less than expected, but it’s still good news,” said Klaus Baader, chief European economist at Societe Generale in London. “It does however show that the pace of the upswing can’t be maintained. Next year is going to be more difficult with unemployment rising and government stimulus petering out.”

ZEW’s gauge of the current economic situation rose to minus 74, less than economists had forecast, from minus 77.2 in August. The euro fell about a fifth of a cent after the report was published, to $1.4590 at 11:30 a.m. in Frankfurt.

Deep Recession

The Economy Ministry has indicated its forecast for a 6 percent economic contraction this year may be too pessimistic.

Improving global trade is boosting demand for exports while the government’s 95 billion-euro ($138 billion) stimulus package is spurring spending at home. The package includes infrastructure investment and a 2,500-euro payment for people who trade in their old car and buy a new one.

Bayer, Germany’s largest drug maker and a supplier of plastics to the car industry, on July 29 posted net income of 532 million euros, beating the 393.1 million euros forecast by analysts in a Bloomberg survey.

Economic growth may slow as stimulus packages expire and rising unemployment damps consumer spending. The 5 billion-euro “cash-for-clunkers” fund, which boosted new vehicle registrations by 22.8 percent in the first five months of the year, ran dry earlier this month.

U.S. Stock-Index Futures Decline; Citigroup, AIG, Alcoa Fall

Sept. 14 (Bloomberg) -- U.S. stock futures dropped after the biggest weekly gain in the Standard & Poor’s 500 Index since July left the gauge valued at the most expensive level relative to earnings in more than five years.

Citigroup Inc. and American International Group Inc. slid more than 1.5 percent as Nobel Prize-winning economist Joseph Stiglitz said the U.S. has failed to fix the underlying problems of its banking system following the collapse of Lehman Brothers Holdings Inc. a year ago. Alcoa Inc. declined 2.6 percent as HSBC Holdings Plc analysts rated the shares “underweight” and metal prices retreated.

Futures on the S&P 500 expiring in December slipped 0.7 percent to 1,029.8 at 9:08 a.m. in New York, after the index rose 2.6 percent last week. Dow Jones Industrial Average futures fell 0.6 percent to 9,472. Nasdaq-100 Index futures lost 0.7 percent to 1,672.5. Stocks in Europe and Asia also retreated.

“As investors ratchet up their expectations for the future, the hurdle becomes harder,” said Tristan Hanson, manager of asset allocation and strategy at Ashburton Ltd. His team this month reduced allocation of equities, mostly by cutting holdings in Asian shares. “We are not bearish on the market, we are still optimistic on a 12-month view, it is just a short-term precaution. A correction seems plausible.”

The S&P 500 has rebounded 54 percent from a 12-year low on March 9 amid signs the worst of an economic recession is past and as companies beat analysts’ earnings estimates.

Valuations

The rally pushed valuations in the U.S. benchmark index to about 19.3 times its companies’ reported earnings, the highest level since June 2004, according to weekly data compiled by Bloomberg.

The U.S. recovery may be the slowest since World War II to regain all the ground lost during the recession, even if economists’ more optimistic forecasts for expansion turn out to be right.

The slump this time was so deep, said JPMorgan Chase & Co. chief economist Bruce Kasman, that the 3.5 percent average quarterly growth rate he sees in the next year won’t be enough to bring gross domestic product back to its $13.42 trillion pre- crisis peak. That’s in contrast with the last 10 recoveries, when GDP returned to its previous levels within 12 months.

Citigroup, the U.S. bank rescued by $45 billion in taxpayer funds, dropped 1.5 percent to $4.54. AIG lost 1.7 percent to $36.90.

‘Problems Are Worse’

“In the U.S. and many other countries, the too-big-to-fail banks have become even bigger,” Stiglitz said in an interview in Paris yesterday. “The problems are worse than they were in 2007 before the crisis.”

A measure of financial shares in the S&P 500 has jumped 139 percent since reaching a low for the year on March 6, paring the drop since Lehman collapsed on Sept. 15 to 31 percent. Banks worldwide have reported $1.62 trillion in losses since the start of 2007 as the credit crisis erupted, Bloomberg data show.

Alcoa, the largest U.S. producer of aluminum, slid 2.6 percent to $12.65. The stock was rated new “underweight” at HSBC, which said the shares look expensive relative to the bank’s estimates for aluminum prices. Alcoa shares have rallied 149 percent since March 6.

Commodity prices also slumped, with copper falling for a fourth day and oil declining below $69 a barrel.

Exxon Mobil Corp., the largest U.S. oil company, slipped 0.9 percent to $69.35, while ConocoPhillips declined 0.6 percent to $45.69.

Turning Defensive

Fund managers at Rothschild & Cie Gestion, BlackRock Inc. and OppenheimerFunds Inc. are moving money out of stocks whose profits are more tied to economic growth and into so-called defensive shares including phone companies, drugmakers and food producers. The asset managers are betting that the economic recovery won’t be strong enough to support gains in so-called cyclical stocks.

Sprint Nextel Corp. soared 21 percent to $4.57. Germany’s Deutsche Telekom AG has asked adviser Deutsche Bank AG to study a potential takeover bid for mobile-phone operator Sprint, the U.K.’s Sunday Telegraph reported, citing unidentified people.

Deutsche Telekom spokeswoman Anna Bischof declined to comment on the report today. Deutsche Bank spokesman Michael Lermer and Sprint spokesman James Fisher have also declined to comment on the newspaper article.

China announced dumping and subsidy probes of chicken and auto products from the U.S., two days after President Barack Obama imposed tariffs on tires from the Asian nation. Chinese industries complain that they’re being hurt by “unfair trade practices,” the nation’s Ministry of Commerce said on its Web site yesterday. The dumping investigation relates to poultry alone, a spokesman said in Beijing today. The ministry didn’t specify the value of imports of the products.

Judge rejects SEC-BofA deal; Cuomo preps charges

NEW YORK -- A federal judge on Monday rejected a $33 million settlement between the Securities and Exchange Commission and Bank of America Corp., saying the SEC's accusations of inadequate disclosure by the bank over bonuses paid at Merrill Lynch must now go to trial.

Separately, New York Attorney General Andrew Cuomo's office is preparing to file charges within the next couple of weeks against several high-ranking executives at Bank of America, claiming they failed to disclose details about the bank's acquisition of Merrill Lynch, according to a person familiar with the investigation.

The ruling in the SEC case comes one month after the agency and Bank of America thought they had put a thorny issue behind them, and leaves the SEC with the task of mounting a case against BofA over one of the most sensitive issues of the financial crisis - executive pay on Wall Street.

Microsoft-Yahoo deal draws antitrust probe

The US Department of Justice is looking into the advertising and search alliance between Microsoft and Yahoo, the companies said on Friday.

Yahoo and Microsoft, which trail a distant second and third respectively to Google in the internet search market, announced their deal in late July in a bid to combine forces and challenge the web giant.

Under the arrangement, Microsoft will provide search and related advertising tools on Yahoo's pages, in return for a 12-per cent revenue cut during the first five years of the deal. Yahoo estimates the pact will add $500 million to annual operating income while cutting capital expenses by $200 million.

While the antitrust probe had been expected, analysts say that the Department of Justice is unlikely to block the deal since the two companies' combined share of the market would still be less than half held by Google.

Both companies said they did not expect the deal to face antitrust obstacles. "As we said when the agreement was announced, we anticipated that this deal will be closely reviewed and we are hopeful it will be approved by early 2010," Microsoft spokesman Jack Ward said.

Yahoo stated that both companies "firmly believe that the information we will be providing will confirm that this deal is not only good for both companies, but it is also good for advertisers, good for publishers, and good for consumers."

According to web tracking firm Comscore, Google controls about 65 per cent of the US search market, compared to Yahoo's 20 per cent and Microsoft's 8 per cent.

Microsoft Cranks Up Windows 7 Marketing Machine

Microsoft (NSDQ:MSFT) continues to set the stage for next month's general availability of Windows 7, accelerating the availability of toolkits to spur adoption of the next-generation desktop operating system and hyping the success of early deployments.

Monday Microsoft said it would release its Microsoft Desktop Optimization Pack 2009 R2 late next month to help organizations migrate to the upcoming Windows 7 -- right around the Oct. 22 scheduled availability of Windows 7 and much earlier than the original release date of early 2010.

The company also released information about several early Windows 7 deployments the company said demonstrated the total cost of ownership (TCO) advantages of implementing Windows 7.

Last week Microsoft released the Microsoft Deployment Toolkit 2010, a "solution accelerator" that IT managers will use to deploy Windows 7 and Windows Server 2008 R2. A release candidate of the toolkit debuted in August, but the final version was not expected until after the Oct. 22 rollout of Windows 7.

Microsoft's overall message: We're not waiting and neither should you.

MDOP 2009 R2 will help IT managers migrate desktops from older versions of Windows such as XP and Vista to Windows 7 and deploy applications on the new desktop OS. It will include tools for application virtualization, advanced group policy management and governance, diagnostics and recovery, and desktop error monitoring, said Gavriella Schuster, Microsoft senior director of Windows product management, in an interview.

Schuster also posted a blog Monday about the MDOP toolkit plans in which she called MDOP "an essential part of your Windows 7 planning and deployment strategy."

The one item MDOP 2009 R2 will not immediately offer for Windows 7 is Microsoft Enterprise Desktop Virtualization (MED-V) which is slated for the first calendar quarter of 2010.

Microsoft made Windows 7 available on Aug. 7 to its volume license customers who subscribe to Software Assurance and the vendor is starting to promote the results of those early customer deployments.

Early adopters include Baker Tilly, a professional services company in the U.K.; Getronics, an IT services company in the Netherlands; and the City of Miami in the U.S.

Based on the experience of those and other companies, Microsoft said adoption of Windows 7 could reduce IT labor costs between 10 and 20 percent or between $70 and $160 per PC annually. Baker Tilly is already realizing PC management cost savings of 18 percent, said Ward Ralston, group product manager for the Windows Server Division, in an interview.

Ralston also said that Miami is realizing the power savings equivalent of $54 per PC per year using Windows 7.

Now Nokia all set to enter into telecom services

Having ruled the market for over a decade, the world’s largest handset manufacturer, Nokia, is shifting gear to reposition itself from being a device maker to a services and solutions provider in the wake of mounting competition from players like Apple and Research-in-Motion.

“Services is next big thing...we see people living their life 24x7 through applications on their mobile phones. Whether it is Twitter or Facebook, people live their life online,” Nokia India Managing Director D Shivakumar told PTI when asked about the company’s future plans.

Nokia, one of the key developers of GSM (Global System for Mobile Communications), the second-generation mobile technology, is looking at providing various services and solution ranging from music downloads to games to financial services and information about prices and weather to the Indian farmers among many others.

The company has already inked a location-based service deal with social networking site Facebook. Under the deal, people could update their location and status directly to the social networking site via a Nokia Ovi account.

The company is also planning to enter the money market, with the launch of ‘Nokia Money Service’ - offering basic financial services on mobile phones - by next year.

“The service would enable consumers to send money, pay for goods, services and bills, and recharge their prepaid SIM cards using their mobile phone,” Mr. Shivakumar said.

Microsoft and Nokia Form Global Alliance to Design, Develop and Market Mobile Productivity Solutions

NEW YORK, Aug 12, 2009 (PR Newswire Europe via COMTEX) ----Companies will collaborate to bring Microsoft Office Mobile and related communications and collaboration software and services to Nokia smartphones.

The worldwide leader in software and the world's largest smartphone manufacturer have entered into an alliance that is set to deliver a groundbreaking, enterprise-grade solution for mobile productivity. Today, Microsoft Business Division President Stephen Elop and Nokia's Executive Vice President for Devices Kai Oistamo announced the agreement, outlining a shared vision for the future of mobile productivity. This is the first time that either company has embarked on an alliance of this scope and nature.
